This report comes from games industry research firm DFC Intelligence. According to DFC Intelligence, there is a “strong likelihood” that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will miss their planned 2020 launch dates. And if the systems do launch in 2020 as originally planned, it’s quite likely that supply will be constrained and they could be priced higher than they would be otherwise. “Even if the situation clears up in a few weeks, the ability to manufacture and release a high-end new game system has already been severely impacted.”

This report comes not long after AMD Executive Vice President of Computing and Graphics Rick Bergman suggested that both the PS5 and Xbox Series X would meet their 2020 release dates, despite the ongoing fears over the coronavirus. This mixed messaging makes it clear that it’s really not certain if the coronavirus will cause the PS5 or Xbox Series X to be delayed out of 2020 and to 2021, but it will largely depend on how much worse the situation with the virus becomes in the coming weeks and months.

In the meantime, the DFC Intelligence report wasn’t all doom and gloom for the video game industry. “Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will release to record consumer demand,” the report stated. This means that whenever the PS5 and Xbox Series X do launch, they are set to be hugely popular products, though that should come as no surprise considering how much the game industry has grown in the last couple of decades.

Neither the PS5 release date nor the Xbox Series X release date are set in stone, and nothing beyond a vague “holiday 2020” release window has been announced. It will be interesting to see if one or both consoles are delayed to 2021, and if not, how that may impact their initial price point. We should learn more in the coming months.
